Introductions
WELCOME
Glad you're a part of this class. Please take a few minutes to introduce yourself by telling us something about yourself to help us get to know you - can be an interesting fact, a brief story, or why you're taking this course.
My name is Amanda, and I'm a last-semester Sophomore (yay)! My major is ASL Interpreting, and I'm hoping to pair it with some medical or legal aspects. I'm enrolled in this course because I love the Deaf community and their language with all of my heart. I believe this class will broaden my horizons even more, and educate me further with its insights. Nice meeting you all!
Hello, Amanda! Appreciate you being brave and taking the initiative to be the first one to post. It's always exciting when students are looking to broaden their horizons! What specific areas do you hope will be included in this course or areas where your horizons will be broadened?
I've never had a course like this before, but I would like to know the differences/similarities in the methods of teaching. I know there are nuances for each culture, and I'm curious as to how different/similar those nuances are. Also, maybe the most effective techniques that are being used currently, and what makes them so successful.
Yeah! I'll actually start class on Thursday by asking students to reflect on the PowerPoint from last night again. I intentionally used a strategy that is key technique in teaching students who are Deaf. We'll refer to it throughout the semester in a variety of ways - for one specific reason. :-) Do I have your curiosity piqued? Let's see if you can work through this riddle!!
(Somehow I removed my comment so here it is again) Hey! My name is Victoria! My major is Deaf education with a concentration in English. I am from Delaware (the state not Delaware Ohio). I came to Eastern to study Deaf education because they do not offer Deaf education or any ASL field as a major at the one state school Delaware has (University of Delaware). I am loving Kentucky so far and cannot wait to get involved in the Deaf community here as well!
Welcome to Kentucky, again! I'm sure others have welcomed you as well. How long have you been here at EKU? In what ways have you connected with the Deaf Community so far?
Hey, everyone! My name is Jessi Ritzmann; I'm a junior in the Psychology department with minors in ASL and Special Ed. I started ASL because while I was volunteering in an autism unit I had to learn and teach some signs to the kids who were nonverbal. I fell in love with the language and wanted to learn more. I'm really excited to learn more ASL and to be getting more into classes that can help me be more involved into the Deaf community!
Great to have you in class, Jessi. One of the great parts of this class is to have majors from a variety of backgrounds to offer their perspectives and previous learning. I'm excited about students reaching out to contact with students who are deaf to learn more about the rich diversity of deaf education.
Hi friends! My name is Ashley Lawrence and I am a freshman here at EKU! My major is DHH/Elementary Ed and I'm super excited to be in this class to take that first major step towards my degree!! I wanted to major in Deaf Education because a few summers ago I worked a childcare place in Lexington, in the toddler room, and there was one little boy with deafness. Because he couldn't communicate with his fellow toddlers, he tended to act out and hit or bite anyone who tried to take a toy from him. Thus, I was placed in charge of him and asked to be his eyes and ears and to help him communicate with his friends. He didn't know ASL and neither did I so we kind of just made it work and became super close in the process. From then on, I knew there was no other path for me than teaching kids like him for the rest of my life, so here I am :) I'm so excited to meet all of you! (Sorry for the long post :))
Hi everyone! My name is Shelby Enlow. I am a Occupational Science Major with a minor in ASL. I am taking this class because I think I might want to work with children in my work as an Occupational Therapist. I would love to have the knowledge to help interact and teach deaf and hard of hearing children withing my job. I first started ASL because I have a cousin that is Deaf and I wanted to be able to better interact with her. My love of ASL has grown since then and now I am excited to learn more information that will help me better interact with deaf and hard of hearing children in my job.
Welcome! It's always interesting to have individuals in the class who have family members who are Deaf. Hope you'll be willing to share some of your family experiences as we go through this semester.
Hello Classmates! My name is Jessie Jenkins. I am from a very small Eastern Kentucky town, known as Elliott County or Sandy Hook. I am a second semester Junior in the Communication Disorders program. I am taking this course to further myself in my minor in Special Education. I decided on a Special Education minor because I hope to one day do research in all things autism! The subject is very close to my heart because my most favorite person in the whole world (my brother) was diagnosed with it when he was 10 years old. I look forward to this semester with all of you!
Excited to have you in this course and the unique perspective and learning you will bring. Welcome! Look forward to you sharing your family experiences as well as you find connections.
Ok, here we go gals. You know me and my non-technical communication skills! Pre-Deaf Studies major after being a dental hygienist for 23 years! Whether I use what I learn back in the dental world or go a different route I'm excited to be on this journey. Have loved going back at an older age, truly feel blessed to get this opportunity.
Journeys are often full of adventure and learning. It will be a blessing to have your unique perspective in this class. What is one of the things you feel like you have most in common with all of the students in this class?
I feel like all of us have close to the same expectations in class. We all want to succeed and help serve others in the many ways listed in our different majors.
My name is Savannah Arnold. I am 18 years old and a freshman. I am from Nelson County KY. My degree is in Deaf ED. I am really excited for this class because I want to go to the school of the Deaf. I worked at a Deaf school in Louisville in high school for a little bit.
It's great to have you in the class! Was the school a preschool? I've recently visited Heuser Hearing Institute? It's a really neat school and am excited about the research they are doing there in addition to many other things I saw while there.
Hello, Everyone! My name is Megan Turner. I am a Pre-Communication Disorders major with a minor in American Sign Language. After college I hope to become a Speech Pathologist or Audiologist (I haven't decided yet.) I am from Milton, Kentucky, a small town on the border of Kentucky and Indiana without a single stoplight. My dad is legally Deaf but speaks to communicate, he has a hearing implant called a BAHA that helps him hear in public settings. I am looking forward to this class and getting to know you all throughout the semester!
Hey guys, my name is Megan Farley and I'm 19 years old. I'm a sophomore but I'm a transfer student so it's my first year here at EKU. I'm from a little town called Greenup County, it is as far north east as you can go in Kentucky, so I'm right on the Ohio border. My major is Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education with Elementary Education so I am very excited about this class. I look forward to getting to know all of you guys!
Hey all! My name is Olivia Hatter and I am 21 years old. I'm a first semester Junior, but this is my third year at EKU. I am from Anderson County, Kentucky which is right beside Frankfort (usually have to tell people that because 8 times out of 10 people have no idea where it is). My major is Occupational Therapy with a minor in Special Education. I am taking this course to further my knowledge in my special education minor, I chose this minor due to having an aunt that has Down syndrome and always having an amazing connection with children who have disabilities. I'm excited to learn more about Education for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing!
I'm a little late to the party but hey! My name is Sharon Henninger, and I grew up in Versailles, KY but I'm originally from the north! I'm a second semester sophomore with a major in pre-OS and a minor in ASL and Special Education. I'm taking this course to expand in both of my minors and strengthen the backbone for my major.
Hi my name is Katie Wood and I'm from Lexington, Kentucky! I am a sophomore and an Elementary Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing major. A fun fact about myself is that I recently got married in June to my best friend! I'm excited to further my education on the Deaf community. Sorry I'm a little late to the blog!
Hello Everyone, my name is Katie Numbers. I grew up in Louisville, Ky. I am a senior and a general studies major. I am excited to get a better knowledge on the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community.

DeleteI actually grew up in Versailles, which is only about 25 minutes away so a lot of activities ended up being in Lexington
DeleteOne of my mentors who has had the most impact on me as an educator lives in Woodford County!
