Site Visit Thoughts

Our site visit to the Lexington Hearing and Speech center was last Thursday and I thought it went very well. I enjoyed being able to interact with some of the students who were deaf or hard of hearing. They were all sweet children and I feel like most of us even got attached to at least one child there. It was especially nice to get to socialize with some of the people who work in the deaf and hard of hearing field, and get their take on their jobs. It was also pretty awesome to play with the giant parachute! What did you all think about it?

  1. I agree. I enjoyed that we got to entertain the children, so the parents wouldn't have to worry about them. It was great getting to know some of the children and what they enjoyed doing. Overall I do think it was a great experince. I would go back in a heart beat if I had a chance.

  2. I really enjoyed going up to the school and playing with the kids. I really didn't meet any kids that were deaf or hard of hearing but I still had a great time playing with the kids and painting on their hands and faces. I want to be a teacher for young children so it was nice to set and talk to them and hear their ideas of what they wanted painted on their face.

  3. I really enjoyed this experience and it definitely put things into a whole new perspective for me. Considering my major isn't education for the deaf or hard of hearing, I never really had the chance to experience an event like this one. I would love to experience another event like this again!

  4. I loved going and getting to play with the children. I think it was a great experience and it was nice to take a college "field trip." Other than playing games with the children, I personally really enjoyed getting to know one of the teachers that came around with a student of hers. She had wonderful insight to a lot of things.

  5. I loved the site visit! I really liked interacting with the kids and seeing the different ways they dealt with their hearing. I saw some with hearing aids, some with cochlears, and some with nothing. I really loved the little boy named John, even though he was a terror and kept throwing bean bags behind the bleachers. But, overall it was a great experience.

  6. I love kids, so playing with them on Thursday was so fun! I think we all enjoyed the parachute, and I guess the kids did too. I am so glad we got the opportunity to go on our college "field trip."

  7. It was great to have the opportunity to allow parents to really focus on learning about all the opportunities for their child by keeping the kids entertained while also getting to experience so many different interactions in one night, not to mention class bonding!

  8. I agree with Jessie, it was really nice to get to take a "college field trip." It was much different than I thought it would be. I thought we would be signing most of the time but the amount of children with cochlear implants and hearing aids surprised me. I loved playing with the parachute and watching how the children interacted with each other and with us. I am very glad we were given the opportunity to go and help our

  9. I really enjoyed going there and it really opened my eyes to see the reality of the Deaf community and what Deaf Education classes might actually be: that more and more students who are deaf are getting cochlear implants and are no longer using sign language. This kind of disappoints me, in a way. ASL is such a beautiful language and it has so much history, that it saddens me that even though these children are getting cochlear implants and hearing aids, they are still not learning ASL. It made me wonder, again, if I were in the situation as the parents of the children there, would I teach my child ASL as well as spoken English? I think I honestly would. All in all, however, all those children were adorable and I really enjoyed going on this field trip with you all!

  10. I enjoyed our site visit. I loved being able to interact with the children and watch them enjoy themselves. I think its safe to say that we all channeled our inner child at the end of the night when we played in the parachute! (:

  11. I look at trips like this and not only take in the children and the site, but the classmates as well. I have enjoyed getting to know some of you and see the joy you have for these fields of study. Gotta say the parachute was a lot of fun!!!
